This 5x7" handcrafted silver gelatin image is being offered for one week only at the very special discounted price of $150 – a significant saving from the gallery retail price of my prints. Unlike my other prints, this 5x7" print – printed by me on 11x14" silver gelatin photographic paper – will be delivered UNmounted, and without an overmat. Please know that this special discounted price is good only for orders placed prior to midnight Friday, December 6, 2019. After that date the price will increase to $300.
The print will be made to the same exacting standards as all of my other prints, and will be selenium toned and archivally processed. It will be signed and dated by me, and will include a tastefully designed and photographically printed title at the bottom of the 11x14" paper, along with a discrete embossed stamp denoting this is a silver gelatin print by John Sexton in the lower right corner.
I made the image Corn Lily and Grasses early one chilly September morning following the conclusion of one of my many Anderson Ranch Art Center two-week long workshops in Snowmass, Colorado. Though we were exhausted from the intense and exciting workshop experience, Anne and I were up before first light, hiking into a favorite location of ours that we try to visit every time we are in that area.
I have enjoyed photographing corn lilies since I first became involved in photography. Usually I photograph them in the early summer, when their luminous leaves are a subtle green. This particular corn lily plant had finished its growing stage, and fallen over a few weeks before. I found a quiet grace in the gesture of the plant nestled in the grasses. I used a red filter to separate the yellow-orange color of the dried corn lily leaves from the green of the surrounding grasses. I enjoy the elegant simplicity of this image. This photograph is also reproduced as Plate 48 in my book Recollections: Three Decades of Photographs.
